Nexi exec says group interested in digital euro.

Nexi (NEXII.MI) is looking to develop an electronic version of the euro. However, there aren’t any formal talks regarding The European Central Bank (ECB). The Italian payment firm’s external and corporate affairs director, Saverio Tridico, said this on Friday.

CNBC quoted Nexi Chief Executive Officer Paolo Bertoluzzo as saying that Nexi is “contributing to the design” of the proposed cyptocurrency on Wednesday.

“The digital euro is of strategic importance, and Nexi as a pan-European operator feels a responsibility to contribute on this issue.

But there are no formal contacts with the ECB”, Tridico told Reuters when asked for clarification on Nexi’s role with the initiative.

In July, the European Central Bank’s Governing Council formally gave the green light for the first step of launching a digital version of the euro.

It is part of a global effort to satisfy the growing demands for electronic methods for payment and combat the rise in cryptocurrency.
