Apple today published iOS 16 developer beta 5, which adds a long-awaited battery percentage to the status bar’s battery symbol.
After the release of Apple’s iPhone X, which also featured a large display notch (which houses the hardware required for Apple‘s Face ID facial recognition system) and left little room in the status bar, the battery percentage feature was eliminated.
The battery percentage icon had previously been positioned next to the battery icon. A new “Copy and Delete” option is also available when sharing screenshots in iOS 16 beta 5.
According to The Verge, the battery percentage is now shown to the left of the battery symbol in the status bar, which is a significant change from the previous arrangement (now viewable on all iPad models except for recent Pros).
The updated design now displays the battery level (in digits) within the battery status symbol, much like the smartphones from Oppo, Vivo, and Realme sold in India.
According to the source, the new battery % option must be turned on by going to Settings>Battery>Battery Percentage and clicking the appropriate toggle.
According to Apple Software Updates (@AppleSWUpdates), the toggle is also absent from the iPhone 11, 12 mini, and 13 minis and is most likely owing to a shortage of space.
Since most iPhones now come with Face ID and the notch (except the iPhone SE and SE 2022), seeing the battery percentage requires another swipe down to Control Center.
In 2009, the iPhone 3GS model received the first software update, iPhone OS 3.0, which included the ability to monitor the battery percentage.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has included a new “Copy and Delete” option when sharing a screenshot. Only the fifth beta of iOS 16 features the functionality.
The new functionality essentially allows users to copy screenshots to the clipboard rather than immediately saving them to Photos, which eliminates the need to manually erase screenshots after sharing them with an app (screenshots show when hitting the Done button).
As the screenshot stays in the clipboard rather than being stored in the Photos app, this also helps lessen the amount of screenshot clutter.
As noted in the changelog, the iOS 16 developer beta 6 also includes several additional improvements and bug fixes.
The features above, however, have surfaced in developer beta releases. So it’s important to remember that, depending on user input, they may remove from the final build.
